Hiroshi Sugimoto

In his work, he make the scenes looks realistic by taking black-and-white photos of dioramas in a museum. When I first saw his work, I think he actually went to a cold place where civilization is not very developed and took the photos there. But after I research more, I found out that the photos was taken in a museum. This was very impressed for me and gave me many idea.

I often create digital art by combining different photos. Until now, when I want to use animals, I only use photos of real, living animals that I took by myself. However, I realized that I can also take pictures of stuffed animals in museum and use them for my works.

From this photo and the first photo, I noticed that in his work, even the small details are clearly shown. His sharp black-and-white photos give a very classic feeling. Also, the symmetrical composition make the photo look even more classical, so I think it is a very beautiful classic photograph.

In this work, he creates the images by applying electricity directly to the film without using a lens. I thought this method is similar to Man Ray’s rayographs that I wrote about in my blog before. I still do not fully understand this process, so as a photography major, I want to learn more about these techniques and try to create my own work.
