Matthew Rolston - Portrait

   


     He is a photographer based in Los Angeles, and he is known for celebrity portraits. When he was studying in ArtCenter College of Design, he was found by Andy Warhol, and it help him start his career through work for "Interview" magazine. Later, he became one of the best photographers of the 1980s and worked for many major magazine. Also, he is known as a music video director for artists such as Madonna and Beyonce. In recent years, he has expanded his work to fine art, and in 2025 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from ArtCenter College of Design.



    After thinking about this photo in my own way, I came up with two possible methods. The first method is double exposure: taking one photo of a face facing forward with a white background, and a second photo of a side profile with a hand, and then combining them. The second method is to cut paper into the shapes of a hand and a side profile, place it between the camera and the person’s face, and take the photo. Personally, I think the second method is more interesting, and I felt that it could be used to create many interesting photographs.


    I also learned something from the first photo I shared. It showed me that it is not always necessary to include the entire face in a photograph. This may seem obvious, but before, I thought that a portrait should show the whole face. This photo broke that idea for me and helped broaden my perspective. Keeping this in mind, I want to try to take more interesting and creative portrait photographs.

  He is a photographer who has garnered attention for his self-portrait photographs of his own mental health experiences and aims to visually share emotions that words cannot explain. I was actually attracted to his photographs when I saw them. I feel a sense of solitude in many of his works. I thought from his picture that his technique was good such as his use of shadows, light, and reflections. In the photo above, I think he fixed the camera with a tripod and shot at a slow shutter speed, the person was blurred, and as a result, I could not read the person clearly, which led to a sense of uneasiness. Next is this picture. This photo changed the way I think about portraiture. By putting the cracks over the face where people pay the most attention, we don't get as clear an image as with the photo I talked about before. Duane Michals / portrait inspiration

  He is an American photographer who uses multiple exposures in portrait photography to create beautiful worldviews. His series of works contain stories that capture our interest when we see them.  The image on the top left is one of the photos that inspired me. The photo itself is simple and easy to post-production. But there is something attractive about it. When I thought about what it was, I thought it was a way of directing the viewer's perspective. This photo gets smaller as you move towards the middle. Therefore, the viewer's perspective moves towards the center and focuses on the face in the center. I applied this to create a work. In this photo, the photos get smaller as you move to the bottom left, and the largest and smallest ones are colored, while the others are monochrome. Kathrin Linkersdorff - still life

            She was a former architect and by experience in Japan, she get the concept called "wabi-sabi". It is to find beauty in imperfection and transience, it is a concept even Japanese people like me have. About her works, what I understood is she dry flowers and take out water and make petals thin to show delicateness. The thing I thought is ink is actually color she take from flowers. I want to put delicateness in my works too.      In this photo, she does not use pigment ink, but the delicateness of the petals is very emphasized. By putting the flower in water, I felt the light is hitting the flower more evenly.
